Report Cards Get A New Look... Check Out The Family Guide!

December, 2017

Dear Families:

On Friday, December 8th students will receive a report card showing their progress in district learning standards. Our teachers have worked over the last two years revising our district report cards to reflect our most up to date curriculum standards, teaching practices and assessment strategies. A Family Guide (click here for a sneek peek to report card) to the report card is designed to help you understand the new grading system and to share the many ways that teachers assess student progress in the district learning standards.  Several embedded links connect to the benchmarks, rubrics and assessments that our teachers use to assess student achievement.

We hope that you find this information useful. I welcome you to contact me with your comments and questions about this new format.

Helping Youth Cope with Death and Dying

Whately Elementary, Tuesday, 9/26 6:00-7:30 pm

Dr. Cindy Burch, Psychologist,             Dr. Paul Roud, Psychologist

Shelly Bathe Lenn, Director The Garden

Dr. Jonathon Schwab, Pediatrician

Since 1998, The Garden: A Center for Grieving Children and Teens has been working with youth following the death of someone close. We will all experience a death at some point in our lives. One in five children will have this experience by age 18 (Journal of Death and Dying). When a young person experiences the death of someone close, their grief is often overlooked, or even dismissed. At The Garden, we bring families together who have each experienced the death of someone close and support them as they make their way on their grief journey. The Garden also support communities to help them cope with a loss, whether it is a school, church or agency community.

Topics to be addressed include:

Grief in our bodies. Talking about the death to youth,  Helping youth feel safe, Developing a feelings vocabulary and Remembering someone close.

Time will be made for question and answers.

Superintendent Search Survey and Focus Group Meetings

The Frontier Regional and Union #38 School Committees are currently in the process of conducting a search for the next Superintendent of Schools. The Committee has contracted with Massachusetts Association of School Committees to conduct the search. The Committee also believes this effort will be greatly enhanced by hearing from members of the community and value your thoughts on the qualities you think are important for the next Superintendent to possess.

To make this process as easy and widely accessible as possible, we have posted a link to our Superintendent Criteria Survey, on the Schools’ websites and we have included a link at the end of this memo. Please go to this link to access the survey and share your thoughts with us, this is an anonymous survey. The closing date for this survey is December 6, 2015. We look forward to hearing from as many as possible.

In addition to replying to the survey we invite you to participate in one of two focus group meetings that will discuss the community’s vision for a new superintendent.

The meetings will take place on:

Monday, November 16, 2015 at 6:00 PM

AND

Wednesday November 18, 2015 at 6:00 PM

Both meetings will be held at the Frontier Regional School in the media center.

School Climate Survey

Whately Elementary School is committed to creating the "safest and friendliest" environment possible for our students so they can engage fully in learning and become good friends and citizens. As part of this commitment, the Whately School has created a Climate Committee this year to look at the needs of our overall environment throughout the year, what is working and what we need to ramp up. As this committee's first initiative, along with the support of administration we have partnered with the National School Climate Center to survey students, families and staff about each person's experience of our school environment. Yes it is a big undertaking, but we never have shied away from a challenge and we now need your help!

To Tanzania with Love

The Recorder, Greenfield, MA  April 25, 2016

WHATELY — Whately is an agricultural community. So is Bagamoyo, Tanzania. However, the similarities pretty much end there.

But programs like Asante Sana For Education bridge these cultural gaps and generate money for a good cause at the same time. Founded in West Hartford, Conn., by Ashley Washburn in 2010, ASFE works in partnership with village governments in Tanzania to build primary schools. Asante Sana means “Thank you very much” in Swahili, one of Tanzania’s national languages.

WES Read-a-thon

The WES Read-a-thon has begun! February 1 – 21, 2016

The goal of the WES Read-a-thon is to encourage the habit of daily reading and to earn money for our PTO book fund. This challenge is meant for students to compete against themselves; it is not meant to be a competition between individuals.

  1. Show your weekly reading sheet to Mrs. King on February 5th, 12th, and 22nd to redeem a prize.
  2. Earn a Six Flags ticket for reading at least 6 hours (of unassigned reading) during the course of the Read-a-thon.
  3. Become the reader from your class to choose a new book for our library; this is determined by the number of minutes you read. Your name will be placed in the front of the book that you select, celebrating your Read-a-thon achievement.
  4. Everyone earns a Certificate of Completion.

Proposed Early Release Days

As many of you have heard, there is a proposal to schedule a 1:30 PM dismissal every Friday for district elementary students to allow faculty to collaborative on a variety of projects.  The goal is to minimize the amount of time that teachers are pulled from their classrooms to meet with grade level teams, plan curriculum, analyze data, plan RTI, or participate in school based or district level professional development.  With ever increasing initiatives and accountability facing all educators, allowing time for teachers to plan and coordinate is more crucial than ever.  Several surrounding districts have already initiated these early release days to address the need for more professional collaborative time.

Union #38 Kindergarten registration will begin January 5, 2015 and will continue through January 30, 2015. Packets are available at your school, during school hours.
