See Tracks... Think Train!

Effective December 29, 2014, the Amtrak Vermonter will connect travel through and connect Western MA to all locations from St. Albans, VT to Washington, D.C.  For safety reasons, it is important you know that this train service will utilize tracks running through Whately and Deerfield.  These trains will average between 60-80 Miles per hour in the highest speed locations, so it is crucial that residents exercise extreme caution in the vicinity of the tracks. When a train is traveling at that speed, it will be upon you by the time you hear or see it.  The time and distance required for a train to slow or stop is greatly increased, as well, when traveling at these high speeds.  Please, stay away from the tracks, and make sure your children know to not walk along or cross any train track.

The Frontier Regional and Union #38 School Districts and Amtrak are committed to ensuring the safety of all school-aged children by informing them and the broader school community about this important topic. Over the next couple of weeks, the Amtrak Police will be conducting an educational presentation concerning safe behavior around train tracks in each of our schools.  The District will send a ROBO call to each family reminding them of the new train service’s start date as well.

Thank you for your attention to this important safety concern and your support in keeping our students safe.

Sincerely,

Martha H. Barrett
Superintendent of Schools
