Principal's Message

August 2019

Dear Sunderland Staff and Families,

Welcome Back!

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome everyone back to another school year at Sunderland Elementary School.  Summertime provides all of us with an opportunity to relax, spend quality time with families and friends, and recharge our engines as we get ready to embark with one another on our next educational journey.  I am so appreciative of the collaborative learning community that we all create - students, staff, and families - in an effort to provide a quality educational experience for the beautiful children of Sunderland Elementary School.

Here at Sunderland, the home of the Eagles, everything is lining up nicely for another great year.  Our hard working custodial staff have done a remarkable job giving the building a much needed thorough cleaning.  Additionally, our wonderful school secretary has been busy updating student files, registering new families, ordering materials, and reorganizing our front office area.  The quality, behind-the-scenes work these professionals do on a daily basis helps to keep things running smoothly here at our school. I would also like to thank the Sunderland faculty and staff members who helped to run summer programs here at SES and across the district.  The students with whom they worked with benefited from their summer schooling experience!

Out-Of-School-Time Program Update - Room Change

Sunderland Elementary School continues to grow.  With one 6th grade class graduating, and two kindergarten classes coming in, we have had to add another classroom section for this school year.  As a result, we have done some shuffling of rooms. Our Out-Of-School-Time program will now operate out of the cafeteria.  This is a similar model to the program at Deerfield Elementary School.  The old OSTP space will now house our art and music programs. The phone number for the OSTP is 413.665.9030.

New Staff Members

Each new school year brings positive change.  Please allow me to introduce the newest members of our teacher team at SES:

  • Ethan Gourlay - Instructional Assistant

  • Caroline Joseph - Preschool Teacher - Long-Term Sub

  • Kerry McGrath - 4th Grade Classroom Teacher

  • Karie Miranda - Strings Teacher - Long-Term Sub

We Are All In This Together!

During the 2019-2020 school year, I encourage all families to take an active role in their child’s education.  One way to do this, which not only benefits your own child, but all others as well, is to be an active participant in some of the volunteer opportunities provided by our PTO.   The Sunderland Elementary School PTO has a hand in many of the events that take place over the course of each year. The heavy lifting for these events is usually done by a few individuals and we welcome more families to join in on the fun.   All help is appreciated!

I also want to stress how important it is for ALL of us to keep our students safe.  Included with this memo, you will find information outlining parking lot safety, drop off/dismissal, and visitor sign in procedures.

Once again, welcome back to another school year at Sunderland Elementary School.  I am so appreciative of our Sunderland families, students, faculty and staff. Let’s all have a great year together!
